Unveiled Portrait of Sgt Sabu Dastagir At Pentagon
Arlington, Va., November 12, 2024—Rising artist June Xu proudly announces the unveiling of her latest work, a portrait of Sgt. Sabu Dastagir, at a ceremony held in the Pentagon's World War II hallway. The event, led by Under Secretary of the Air Force Melissa Dalton and Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Energy, Installations and Environment Dr. Ravi Chaudhary, honored Dastagir's dual legacy as a Hollywood actor and decorated World War II tail gunner.
Sgt. Sabu Dastagir, celebrated for his roles in "The Thief of Baghdad" and "The Jungle Book," enlisted in the Army Air Forces during World War II. Serving with the 370th Bomb Squadron, 307th Bomb Group in the Pacific theater, he completed numerous combat missions, earning five Air Medals and the Distinguished Flying Cross with Valor.
"Creating this portrait was a profound journey," said June Xu. "Sgt. Dastagir's story is a testament to courage and dedication, and I am honored to contribute to preserving his legacy."
The unveiling ceremony was attended by Department of the Air Force members of South Asian heritage, including cadets from the Air Force Academy and several AFROTC detachments. Several cadets shared testimonials on the significance of Dastagir's story to them.
"As the daughter of an Indian immigrant, I am significantly moved by the opportunity to help tell this story. It is, unequivocally, the story of America," remarked Under Secretary Dalton.
Dr. Chaudhary added, "Through a piece of incredible artwork by June Xu, the story of Sgt. Sabu Dastagir will live on in the Pentagon for future generations to enjoy."
The portrait has been accepted into the Air Force Historic Program, ensuring that Sgt. Dastagir's contributions will continue to inspire.
